Cambodia Gambling Dens
There is an interesting background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den betting is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and even though visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is correct of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary ship casino, highlights 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational resort and hotel complex that features a number of luxuries accompanying the gambling hall, which offers 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 gaming tables.
